Edmonton, AB, Monday, July 22, 2024 – Africentric Arts is revolutionizing summer activities with a one-of-a-kind summer camp that helps children discover hidden talents and build essential life skills through immersive and creative experiences. Running from August 5th to 9th, this camp offers children aged 4 to 12 the chance to engage in djembe drumming, piano playing, drama, debates, arts and crafts, and more.
"With the rise of social media, children are gaining digital skills but losing fundamental building blocks for talent exploration and skill development," said Francess Cowan, founder and program director at Africentric Arts. "This camp is designed to get children back to basics with some good old fun."
Unleashing Hidden Talents: On the first day of the camp, when asked about their talents, only a few kids could confidently answer. Africentric Arts addresses that gap by providing hands-on experiences that help children discover and showcase their talents. The previous session on June 8-20th saw over 20 children engaging in various activities, culminating in a talent show that left parents in awe of their children's progress.
Breaking Away from Digital Distractions: Despite no strict rules on electronic devices, children naturally gravitated towards engaging activities like dodgeball, soccer, and team-building exercises. "The kids were so ecstatic about debates, musical performances, and playing together that they didn’t even think about their devices," said Elizabeth, a volunteer camp coordinator.
Fostering Identity and Community Service: Through activities centered around self-discovery and community service, the camp teaches children the invaluable rewards of knowing who they are and how they can contribute to society. "We have to show kids why it’s necessary to serve others and the invaluable rewards that come with it," emphasized Pastor Hildah Logun of The Redeem Christian Church of God Wonderland Parish in Stony Plain.
Parents have praised the program, with one mother sharing, "My son came home every day talking about his friends and singing the songs they learned. He couldn't wait to get dressed and attend camp each morning."
The next session promises even more excitement and growth for the young participants. The camp will conclude with a cultural fashion show on August 24th, showcasing the children’s creativity and newfound skills.
